These sketches were taken as Turner travelled downstream from Bremm and the Kloster Stuben to the villages of Ediger and Eller. The uppermost view shows the Petersberg mount at left at the tiny chapel dedicated to St Peter atop it. Eller, at far right, is suggested in brief, the spire of the Church of St Hilarius visible just below Turner’s inscription. Ediger (inscribed ‘Heleder’) is depicted in the larger sketch below; there we see the Church of St Martin and parts of the fortified walls and towers constructed in the fourteenth century to defend the community. The vestiges of the Lehmener Tower are shown in the following sketch. Situated right on the bank of the Moselle, this residential tower was constructed in the thirteenth century as part of the estate of the lords of Lehmen (see also Tate D28370–D28371; Turner Bequest CCXC 10a–11). The tower stands adjacent to the village of Nehren (inscribed ‘Nearne’), shown again in the rear sketch.
