Joseph Mallord William Turner View with Ships Sailing on a River c.1824

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
View with Ships Sailing on a River c.1824
Turner Bequest CCXXIV 47v
Pencil on blue wove paper, 126 x 190 mm
Inscribed in pencil ‘47’ top left, ascending vertically, and ‘53 | O’ bottom right
This sketch appears on the verso of D20339 (CCXXIV 47). Running along the midpoint of the sheet are a series of marks suggesting a horizon. The angular forms of these marks, particularly to the right, may represent sails, suggesting a river view.
For the grouping and dating of these works, see the section Introduction.
Technical notes:
The sheet has suffered water damage, likely a result of the 1928 Tate Gallery flood. This has discoloured the paper particularly on the verso side where an inscription in ink in the bottom right is now illegible.
