Joseph Mallord William Turner Views of a Channel Coast 1845

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 50 Recto:
Views of a Channel Coast 1845
D35575
Turner Bequest CCCLXI 50
Pencil on white wove paper, 111 x 86 mm
Inscribed by Turner in pencil ‘[?S ...]’ towards top right
Inscribed by John Ruskin in red ink ‘50’ top right, ascending vertically
Stamped in black ‘CCCLXI – 50’ top right, ascending vertically

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
With the page turned vertically, there are three quick studies here, probably along the Channel coast; in two cases there is a ship, possibly a steamer, off the shore. See the sketchbook’s Introduction for the many slight coastal and shipping views and inscribed studies of clouds and the sun over the sea scattered through it.
Apparently by an oversight, although its verso (D35576) is listed in Finberg’s 1909 Inventory, this page is not.1
