Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 62 Recto:
Views of the Harbour at Pesaro, with Sailing Boats 1819
D14601
Turner Bequest CLXXVI 58
Pencil on white wove paper, 111 x 184 mm
Inscribed by Turner in pencil ‘Pesaro’ top centre
Inscribed by John Ruskin in red ink ‘58’ bottom right (now faint)
Stamped in black ‘CLXXVI – 58’ bottom right

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Both the upper and lower sketches continue across folio 61 verso opposite (D14600; Turner Bequest CLXXVI 57a). Turner inscribed the name of the Adriatic town, abut half way between Rimini and Ancona on this page, but the old harbour has undergone much modern development, so that the viewpoints are unclear.
For Cecilia Powell’s comments on the relatively uneventful phase of Turner’s journey between leaving Rimini and reaching Ancona (folios 61 recto–69 recto; D14599–D14613; Turner Bequest CLXXVI 57–65), see under D14599.1
