Turner’s inscription identifies the location of these sketches as Cava de’ Tirreni (formerly known as La Cava), a town amidst the Lattari Mountains on the road between Nocera and Salerno. The rough nature of the draughtsmanship suggests that the artist was drawing from a moving carriage or other vehicle.
Also on this page in the bottom left-hand corner, parallel with the left-hand edge, is a partial study of the prow of a boat.
