This study may relate to Turner’s 1836 tour of the Alps, which he made in the company of the wealthy Scottish landowner H.A.J. Munro of Novar; for more information, see the Introduction to this section.
Turner’s specific viewpoint has not been identified, although it likely relates to his 1836 traverse of Italy’s Aosta valley, perhaps showing a vista close to Cormayeur or Pre-Saint-Didier. As he did in a number of the studies catalogued within this grouping, Turner combined fluid application of watercolour with details drawn in pencil. Here he also added touches of red and yellow gouache on the dominant mountain on the left.
