An old annotation to a volume of Finberg’s Inventory in Tate’s Library identifies the subject more precisely as ‘York from Fishergate on right walls and Fishergate postern, in centre St Croix Tower on left walls of Castle, in distance towers of Minster’. Turner records the view looking northwards along the River Foss from near the present Fishergate bridge, close to the confluence of the Foss with the River Ouse. A weir, and possibly lock gates, can be seen in the middle distance, presumably built to maintain a steady head of water against the tidal Ouse.
