This view of Lewes from the north-west continues on folio 4 recto opposite (D35267). The rugged outline of the South Downs looms in the background, their profile extending to the opposite page. In the foreground at the left Turner has written ‘p mill’, which may indicate the location of a paper mill. Taking the church in the centre to be that of St John sub Castro, with its distinctive castellated towers (seen also folio 2 verso; D35264), this paper mill could be that established at the Pells, an area of natural pools, in 1802;1 see also folio 22 recto (D35303).
