Joseph Mallord William Turner Lewes 1845

Folio 6 Verso:
Lewes 1845
D35272
Turner Bequest CCCLIV 6a
Pencil on white wove paper, 72 x 104 mm
Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation and continuing briefly to the left on folio 7 recto opposite (D35273), this hastily-drawn sketch appears to show a castle mound, most probably that of Lewes, with stepped fortifications. Turner has focussed here on trees, with a shaded area possibly indicating a wood by the fortification, along with a row of trees, some of them poplars, delineated individually.
