This is one of a large group of separate studies, most of which were made in gouache and watercolour on blue paper, associated with a visit to Petworth House in West Sussex, the home of the third Earl of Egremont. For more information, see the Introduction to this section.
The light-filled and colourful interior seen here is Petworth’s Old Library, a room used as a studio by artists staying in the house (see Tate D22682; Turner Bequest CCXLIV 20). In the present study, a man sits at a table covered with a vivid red cloth studying a large volume, apparently holding a magnifying glass. Natural light pours in from the distinctive arch-topped window, illuminating the tabletop as well as the bookcase behind the man, above which rests a sizable painting. The window is also depicted, less accurately in terms of its structure, in Tate D22674 (Turner Bequest CCXLIV 102).1
For more information about the Old Library, see the entry for Tate D22685 (Turner Bequest CCXLIV 23).
