This is one of a large group of separate studies, most of which were made in gouache on blue paper, associated with a visit to Petworth House in West Sussex, the home of the third Earl of Egremont. For more information, see the Introduction to this section.
This colour study may present a view of the ridge at the north-westerly edge of Petworth Park, which is seen more distantly across the smaller of the two artificial lakes in Tate D22674 (Turner Bequest CCXLIV 12). The combination of red and green feels autumnal and is fitting with the dating of Turner’s relevant visit to Petworth, which almost certainly took place in October and November of 1827.
Verso:
Blank, save for inscriptions: inscribed in red ink ‘239’ bottom right; inscribed in pencil ‘22 | l’ near centre; stamped with Turner Bequest monogram and ‘CCXLIV 59’ bottom left.
