This is one of a large group of separate studies, most of which were made in gouache on blue paper, associated with a visit to Petworth House in West Sussex, the home of the third Earl of Egremont. For more information, see the Introduction to this section.
The present study of Petworth Park is one of two in the Turner Bequest to include donkeys: for the other see D22759 (Turner Bequest CCXLIV 97). This study is the more detailed of the two. Turner took an interest in Lord Egremont’s livestock during his stay, also depicting oxen, horses, dogs and deer within his sketches.1

The once blue paper around the image is discoloured, likely the result of past overexposure to light while displayed in a window mount.
