The page was used both ways for two related sketches. In the horizontal prospect, the ruin of Castello di Salorno (Castel Haderburg) is seen on its dramatic crag high on the east side of the Adige (Etsch) Valley, with the village of Salorno (Salurn) just beyond to its north-east. Overlapping at right-angles at the bottom right is a more detailed study of the castle from the west; see also the verso (D31761).
At the top centre are two slight continuations from views of the village and castle on folio 83 verso opposite (D31759); see also the distant view from the north-east on folio 82 verso (D31758). The castle stood on Turner’s route northward between Trento and Bolzano (Bozen), and there are nearby subjects on adjacent pages; see the sketchbook’s Introduction for the overall itinerary.
