The main sketch on this page, turned horizontally, depicts a view of the historic centre of San Remo, with the cathedral of San Siro visible on the left. Turner’s viewpoint is to the east of the church, looking towards its apse and Baroque campanile. The detailed, topographical nature of the study suggests that the artist may have stayed in the city overnight, rather than merely passing through. Another sketch can be found on folio 40 recto opposite (D21209).
For further sketches of San Remo, see Turner’s Coast of Genoa sketchbook of 1838 (Tate D21289, D21357; Turner Bequest CCXXXII 10 and 49 verso).
A second landscape sketch in the top right-hand corner depicts a view of the Ligurian coast, looking west towards Bordighera.
