In mid-January 1829, Turner travelled westwards from Turin, crossing the Alps to France via Susa, the Mont Cenis pass and Chambéry. He used this sketchbook to record around two dozen studies of the Alpine scenery he saw en route. Executed with the sketchbook turned horizontally, the present example features a river in the foreground and was possibly recorded near Susa.
