In mid-January 1829, Turner travelled westwards from Turin, crossing the Alps to France via Susa, the Mont Cenis pass and Chambéry. He used this sketchbook en route to record around two dozen Alpine studies, including the present view of mountain peaks, executed with the sketchbook turned horizontally. It extends across the gutter below to folio 50 recto opposite (D21847), which features buildings in the foreground.
