The subject of this sketch is identified here as the French town of Le Pont-de-Beauvoisin, located along the River Guiers to the west of Chambéry. Turner likely reached this location in the third week of January 1829, as he travelled north-west towards Lyon. From the banks of the river, Turner’s view takes in the single-arched bridge at the centre and the Carmelite Church (l’Eglise des Carmes) to the right, with its domed belltower.
Turner had previously visited Le Pont-de-Beauvoisin on both the outward and return legs of his first major tour of Italy in 1819–20; for a list of relevant works, see Nicola Moorby’s entry for the Paris, France, Savoy 2 sketchbook in the present catalogue (Tate D14085; Turner Bequest CLXXIII 59 a).
