This is one of a large group of separate studies, most of which were made in gouache on blue paper, associated with a visit to Petworth House in West Sussex, the home of the third Earl of Egremont. For more information, see the Introduction to this section.
The present view of the Upperton Monument, an early nineteenth-century folly in Petworth Park possibly designed by Turner’s friend and contemporary, the architect John Soane,1 was made on the same sheet of paper as a landscape study identified as showing the Sussex Downs (Tate D29009; Turner Bequest CCXCII 59). Ian Warrell has suggested that the style and grey (rather than blue) paper support of this sheet is indicative of a slightly later date than the other gouache studies catalogued here, perhaps in the early 1830s.2 There is a related sketch of the Upperton Monument in the earlier, 1825, Mortlake and Pulborough Sketchbook (Tate D18739; Turner Bequest CCXIII 19).
