As Turner’s upper inscription suggests, these two views depict Santo Stefano al Mare, on the Ligurian coast near San Remo. The upper vista is from the west, looking along the shore towards the town, with the parish church in the centre and the fortified medieval Torre Ennagonale on the right. The lower study, executed with the sketchbook held horizontally, represents the same buildings seen from the east.
