There are two main studies, inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation. Both show the ruined Castel Salorno (Haderburg) on its dramatic crag high on the east side of the Adige (Etsch) Valley (labelled twice in its German form), south-west of the village of Salorno (Salurn); both sketches are carried over a little onto folio 84 recto opposite (D31760). Below is a separate study of the ruins from a similar direction, the other way up.
The castle is seen in the distance from further upstream on folio 82 verso (D31757) and in views from the south opposite and on folio 84 verso (D31760–D31761), on Turner’s route northward between Trento and Bolzano (Bozen), and there are nearby subjects on adjacent pages; see the sketchbook’s Introduction for the overall itinerary.
