While noting Turner’s inscription referring to the River Dove and giving the sketchbook its title of ‘Derbyshire’, Finberg did not further identify this subject, which clearly depicts the aqueduct that carries the Trent and Mersey Canal across the river near Egginton. Always interested in canals, Turner was now able to see one of the oldest on the English network, dating back to 1777, as he passed through the area south-west of Derby, most probably on his way north-west to Knutsford and Tabley at the outset of his summer tour in 1808; see Introduction to the sketchbook. In his drawing, he indicates various figures, one on horseback, and a barge on the canal.
