Joseph Mallord William Turner Harewood Castle from the North 1808

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 90 Verso:
Harewood Castle from the North 1808
D07249
Pencil on white wove paper, 108 x 185 mm
Inscribed by Turner in pencil ‘Water’ bottom left

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Drawn with the sketchbook inverted.
Finberg describes this drawing as being on ‘p.87’ (now folio 90), where the numbers probably added by John Ruskin, ‘303’ and ‘87’ and the Bequest stamp ‘CVI 87’ appear. In fact, the drawing is on the verso of the leaf.
For Harewood Bridge and Castle see note to folios 86 verso and 88 verso (D07243, D07246; Turner Bequest CVI 83a, 85a). The view here is the same as Turner had painted in a watercolour made for Edward Lascelles of Harewood in 1798 (Harewood House).1
