This is one of two composition studies in this sketchbook for View of Richmond Hill and Bridge exhibited at Turner’s Gallery in 1808 (Tate N00557).1 Hill describes it as the first of three related drawings including a figure sketch on folio 38 (D05832). Edward Croft-Murray, in a pencil annotation to a copy of Finberg in the Tate Library, was the first to recognise the view, adding that it is taken from near Asgill House, looking upstream. Hill notes the presence of the Star and Garter building on the left of the boat’s mast. The second study, from rather further away on the Surrey bank of the Thames, is folio 35 verso (D05827).
