Hill notes the similarity of this view to one taken from a closer viewpoint on folio 112 verso of the sketchbook (D06310) and also to an oil sketch, Guildford from the Banks of the Wey, painted in the evening (Tate N02310).1 As noted by Butlin and Joll, the subject of the oil was first established by Christopher Pinsent in letters of 1 January and 2 March 1970; as well as Guildford Castle and the eighteenth-century brick tower of Trinity Church, he drew attention to chalk quarries on the right. Hill further observes that the present drawing is taken from the same viewpoint as another on folio 114 verso (D06314) but looking back down the Wey.
