Rather than Herstmonceux Castle, as stated by Finberg, this must be a further view of Battle Abbey of which a group of drawings probably begins on folio 45 of the sketchbook (D05662). In pencil annotations to a copy of Finberg now in Tate’s Library, Edward Croft-Murray suggested that the present drawing includes ‘Battle Abbey Gatehouse’.
