Edward Croft-Murray, in annotations to a copy of Finberg now in Tate’s Library, suggested ‘Winchelsea’ for this subject, but the boats in the foreground indicate a river wider than the Brede as it passes below that town and thus likely to be the Rother below Playden or Rye. For a drawing certainly of Rye from the Rother see folio 8 of the sketchbook (D05764; Turner Bequest XCII 45).
Finberg records that this was one of four leaves from the sketchbook ‘found loose’.
The leaf is stained along the left margin.
