This is one of several drawings in this sketchbook (see also the verso and folio 20, D10446, D10447) leading towards the watercolour (British Museum, London)1 engraved by W.R. Smith in 1832 for Picturesque Views in England and Wales. The view is towards James Paine’s Richmond Bridge from downstream with Richmond Hill beyond. In the watercolour, Turner added a picnic party in the foreground. Similar views are on the verso and folio 20 (D10446, D10447). A further, possibly related sketch is in the Hints, River sketchbook (Tate D10608; Turner Bequest CXLI 14).
