Finberg tentatively suggested ‘rocks’ as the subject for these two sketches, and although the jagged lines and boxy shapes here do match Turner’s other more identifiable sketches of rocks, there is nothing in this drawing to indicate the particular subject. Considering the other subjects in the sketchbook, however, it is likely that these are some of the rocks of crags off the coast of Dunbar.
