This slight sketch shows the gentle ascent of Calton Hill leading to Nelson’s Monument at its summit. Turner made numerous sketches of and from Calton Hill, often focusing on the newly erected (1807–15) monument (see folio 54 verso; D13416; CLXV 52a).
