Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
On his route to Scotland in 1818 Turner stopped off at Newcastle and North Shields to make sketches of the two towns of the Rivers of England project (see folio 13; D13473). From the quay at North Shields, Turner sketched the view east towards the mouth of the River Tyne (continuing on folio 3; D13453). On the north bank, seen on the present page, about three quarters of a mile away to the north-east are the remains of Tynemouth Priory (see folio 14 verso; D13476). There are boats in the foreground and south shields is seen on the continuing page.
