From the southern banks of the Firth of Forth this view looks down on the beach below and across the water to the far bank with the Grampians in the distance. In the centre of the present page may be Blackness Castle which sits on a promontory on the southern bank. The foreground is rather roughly drawn but Turner has indicated the outline of a tree framing the composition at the left, and rough shapes at the bottom of the page indicate the banks of the Forth at low tide just north of Hopetoun House. The drawing continues on folio 38 (D13523).
There are further sketches of Blackness Castle on the three previous double-page sketches (folios 34 verso–37; D13516–D13521).
