The Village of Dean provides the semi-rural foreground to this view of Edinburgh from the west. As in folio 70 verso (D13746; CLXVII 87a), St George’s Church and Edinburgh Castle form the focal point of the picture, this time with Arthur’s Seat clearly visible in the background. More of the city, especially the New Town, is shown in the following sketch across two pages of the sketchbook (folios 71 verso–72; D13739–D13740; CLXVII 83a–84).
