Approaching Borthwick Castle from the north-west Turner made two distant sketches of the castle, recording its landscape setting (see also folio 78; D13712; CLXVII 70). We look along the Gore Water winding towards and around the castle which is nestled between low hills. Borthwick Church is beyond and to the right. The castle is identifiable by its distinctive cube shape, with its western side cut into two parallel towers.
