This sketch of Crichton Castle from the north is one of a series of such views in this sketchbook that track Turner’s progress north as he returned to Edinburgh from a day’s sketching (see folio 86; D13728; CLXVII 78). This sketch is from a point near the village of Crichton and looks south along the valley of the Tyne River with trees and barn-like buildings in the foreground and the castle in the distance. To the left of the castle a square shape may indicate Crichton Collegiate Church.
