This page contains a detailed pencil study of a marble candelabrum found to the left of the altar in the Church of Sant’Agnese fuori le mura on the Via Nomentana in Rome. The candelabrum, which can be compared with a measured drawing by Sir John Soane dating from 1778,1 is decorated with sculptural acanthus leaves.2 Turner also made a sketch of a bust of Christ from the same church, as well as various views of the exterior, see folios 1 and 61 verso (D16399 and D16430; Turner Bequest CXC 5 and 24a).
