The village of Simplon (Simplon-dorf), lies within a valley approximately nine miles south of the Simplon Pass through the Swiss Alps. This view is taken from the road to the south-east, representing the outward leg of the journey from Italy to Switzerland. The highest mountain peak visible on the left-hand side of the composition is the Fletschhorn. Further sketches of Simplon can be found on the inside front cover (D40959) and folio 1 verso (D16891).
