This page contains three sketches. The dark grey ground of the watercolour wash makes the pencil details extremely difficult to discern. However, the studies appear to represent views of Lake Maggiore. The upper two scenes in particular may depict the approach towards Arona from the Simplon road to the north which skirts the lake’s western shore. The upper vista appears to depict the Rocca di Angera on the opposite side of the lake, whilst the middle view shows a distant view of Arona with the vast statue of San Carlo Borromeo on the heights above the town. Compare folio 27 (D16940).
