With the sketchbook inverted, and continuing on folio 75 verso (D17639), is a drawing of the royal squadron at Leith Roads belonging to a sequence of sketches in this book (see folio 64; D17618). Although Turner’s drawing is highly economical, and particular vessels cannot be identified, it managed to capture the flurry of activity and movement of the fleet. A pattern of vertical and horizontal lines is created by the crossing of masts and spars, and by the sails, flags and bunting. Beyond the boats, and continuing on folio 75 verso (D17639), is the shore of Leith with the rough outline of Arthur’s Seat at the right.
