Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
The view is taken from the road leading back into the town through the south gate; the towers of the cathedral of St Etienne appear at right. Turner had followed the valley of the River Yonne some eighteen miles from Montereau. His annotations show he had at first confused the two places before correctly labelling the drawing ‘Sens’. From here he continued along the Yonne to Joigny (see folios 6 and 7 of this sketchbook, D04398, D04399).
