For Turner’s first sketch of Avallon, seen from the Auxerre road, see folio 10 of this sketchbook (D04402). His inscription, meaning ‘Ditto’, refers to a slightly more developed view looking back at the town from the road south towards Saulieu, on folio 11 (D04403). Here, the Hôtel de Condé, the spired Porte d’Horloge and the clock tower of St-Lazare are seen in the centre of the town.
