For Bonneville see the recto of this sheet (D04440). The mountains in this sketch may continue those in folio 47 of this sketchbook (D04442), towards the right. They appear in the background of the painting Châteaux de St. Michael, Bonneville, Savoy, a view of the approach to the town from the Geneva road that was one of two companion oils exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1803 (Yale Center for British Art, New Haven, Connecticut).1 A larger drawing (Courtauld Gallery, London),2 probably at least begun on the spot but coloured in Turner’s lodgings or later back in London, shows the same view which Turner repeated in a colour study (Tate D04901; Turner Bequest LXXX H ) and watercolour of 1817 (on the London art market in 2007).3
