This sketchbook contains two sketches made in Nancy, through which Turner passed on his way home through France – this, and folio12 (D04747), apparently showing the Porte Stanislas from different sides. The gate was begun in 1752 and reconstructed by the architect Richard Mique, being completed in 1762. Turner’s interest in the city of Nancy, noted by David Hill, may have been due to its proximity to the birthplace of the painter Claude Lorrain at Chamagne in the Vosges.
