Here he has climbed up some way from the village into the meadows at the foot of the Great Scheidegg pass, to take a view of the Eiger rearing above. To elucidate the subject, David Hill also reproduces a photograph of his own, taken from a similar but slightly more elevated position. For a sketch of a rather closer view of the Eiger from the lower glacier at Grindelwald, see folio 29 (D04768). Turner made a chalk elaboration of this in his Grenoble series (Tate D04537; Turner Bequest LXXIV 44).
