With folios 4 and 6–8 of this sketchbook (D04801, D04803–D04805), this leaf depicts five figures Turner saw taking part in a religious procession, presumably in Berne (where he bought the book) and on a saint’s day. Folio 6 shows an effigy being carried. Turner had already drawn a similar procession in Martigny (Tate D04580; Turner Bequest LXXIV 87). Finberg read Turner’s inscription as ‘Wool’.
