Drawn with the sketchbook inverted, and continued on folio 50 (D06923; Turner Bequest CIV 49) this is one of three versions of this subject in the sketchbook and related to the picture (Tate N01857) which, according to Butlin and Joll, is a candidate for a ‘Sketch of Cows, &c’ exhibited at Turner’s Gallery in 1809.1 See catalogue note to folio 47 verso (D06918; Turner Bequest CIV 46a) for the drawings and fresh evidence that the picture was hanging at Tabley in 1809.
