This sketch shows the small Cumbrian town of Brough, as seen from the road to its north upon which Turner travelled between Appleby and Barnard Castle. Upon a large earthwork stands the ruin of Brough Castle. The parish church of St Michael is to the left and the rooftops of several buildings stand in front of the castle.
There are two further sketches on this page. At the top right is a faint sketch of Brough Castle and at the top left a view of the nearby Fox Tower which is also seen from the road. There is a similar view of this folly on folio 36 verso (D25594).
