The sketch on this page has been inscribed ‘Wallton’ by Turner. Considering his route in 1831 and the nearby sketchbook pages which depict Penrith and the western Scottish Borders, it is likely that this is the village of Walton near Brampton in Cumbria, and that Turner passed through it while visiting Naworth Castle on his route from Carlisle to Dumfries (see Tate D25817; Turner Bequest CCLXVI 29). If this is the case then the sketch is likely to show a view south along the King Water, just to the east of the village, with the Tendale Fells in the distance. There is an almost identical sketch, though half the size, at the bottom of folio 41 verso (D25604).
