Drawn with the sketchbook inverted on a ripped page, this sketch of shipping is one of a number of such subjects scattered throughout the sketchbook: folios 17 verso–18, 62 verso, 64 verso (D25671–D25672, D25755, D25759). Turner had several opportunities to sketch shipping while he was using this sketchbook on his 1831 tour of northern England and Scotland.
