Joseph Mallord William Turner Distant Mountains 1831

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 31 Verso:
Distant Mountains 1831
D25698
Turner Bequest CCLXV 31a
Pencil on white wove paper, 59 x 96 mm

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Drawn across the page are slight sketches of the outlines of distant hills but there is not enough topographical information to identify them. However, if the sketch opposite on folio 32 (D25699) depicts Hailes Castle near Haddington, East Lothian, it is possible that these are the hills to the south of the castle, including Traprain Law, the site of an ancient hill fort.
