J.M.W. Turner: Sketchbooks, Drawings and Watercolours

This page contains four sketches of Lincluden Collegiate Church and a small sketched view of Dumfries. With the book inverted, the largest sketch is of the south wall of the choir of the church with its three trefoil arched windows separated by buttresses, and the southern transept at the left with its gabled end. (There is a similar view on folio 53 verso; D25866). At the top left of the page is a sketch of the ragged ruins of the tower at the north of the church (not actually part of the church but part of a range of buildings at its northern end). Beneath this Turner rotated the book to the right to make a sketch of the ruins, probably from the west, with the arch at the western end of the choir and the remains of the nave at the right, and the northern tower at the left. Beneath this is a small detail sketch of part of the ruins, perhaps the broken arch of the nave.

Beneath the arch sketch is a view of Dumfries with the three spires of Greyfriars Kirk, Midsteeple and St Michael’s Church (see folio 56; D25871 for further details).
